Media Montage Podcast 82: Censorship

You can't say that! Bruce and Larry take a look at censorship in media. They examine the spectrum of censorship from outright government oppression to defacto censorship by corporations, to chilling effects to self-censorship.

They visit self policing censorship by media in the forms of the Comics Code, movie and TV ratings and the ill-advised Parental Advisory stickers of the 1980s.

What effects do these various censorship methods have on content? Is censorship ever advisable? Why does Bruce want to be censored? Were the Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television really that bad?  We use those seven dirty words and a few others, so be warned. Sensitive material in episode 81 of the Media Montage Podcast!

Media Montage Podcast 81: Willow (1988)

The 1980s saw a number of fantasy films released, and the genre culminated in 1988's Willow, starring Warwick Davis and Val Kilmer from the minds of George Lucas and Ron Howard.

It was a highly anticipated effects filled movie that represented the advent of some new filmmaking techniques.

Bruce and Larry have some differing opinions on this film. Does it hold up? How does it compare to modern fantasy films, and the other fantasy releases of its era?  Where does it fit between Star Wars and the Lord of the Rings?

Bruce and Larry discuss story, effects and the broader 80s fantasy genre in Episode 81 of the Media Montage Podcast!

Media Montage Podcast 67: Nexus - God Con

Nexus is an independent comic book from the minds of Mike Baron and Steve ‘The Dude’ Rude. It stars Horatio Hellpop as the great and powerful Nexus, a man tasked by the alien Merk with hunting down and executing the galaxy’s worst mass murderers from his base on the planet Ylum.  In Nexus: God Con, Horatio and his lovely partner Sundra Peale deal with the arrival of all the One True Gods in the Universe to their cozy little world.

Bruce and Larry take a look at this Nexus miniseries, its approach to controversial religious topics including Horatio’s crisis of faith, and confrontations with his (and the reader’s) conceptions of God.  Religious stories can be a touchy subject, especially when some of your main characters are Jesus, Mohammed, the Buddha, Yahweh, and the embodiment of Evil.

One man versus a rapey band of hillybilly killers. Set in a vague, ill-defined swampy area, this 1989 movie pays painful homage to Lethal Weapon, Rambo, Miami Vice, Death Wish, Chuck Norris, and other 80s action films.

It also managed to spawn 2 sequels, that, against our better judgment, we agreed to revisit in the future. We take a look at what we loved and hated about this movie (mostly hated).
