Media Montage Podcast 94 - CHAPPiE (2015)

Artificial Intelligence is a theme that has been explored numerous times on the Media Montage Podcast, the Terminator, Google as Skynet, The Outer Limits and of Course Short Circuit!

This week Bruce and Larry look at another AI in CHAPPiE, Neil Blomkomp's 2015 sci-fi exploration of the subject.  The film stars Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Sigourney Weaver, Hugh Jackman, and Watkin Tudor Jones (Ninja) and Yolandi Visser of the South African zef rap-rave group Die Antwoord. This movie has been critically panned, but Bruce and Larry find a lot to like about it.

They look at some of the larger themes of consciousness, religion and morality presented in the film. Does CHAPPiE deserve the hate it's been getting? Find out in episode 94 of the Media Montage Podcast!

Media Montage Podcast 93: Short Circuit (1986) and Short Circuit 2 (1988)

Number 5 is alive! Loveable robot Johnny 5 is in the spotlight this week as Bruce and Larry revisit the 1980s Short Circuit films.

Tim Blaney as Number 5, Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenburg, Fisher Stevens and Michael McKean appear in Short Circuit (1986) and Short Circuit 2 (1988).

These sweet family comedies explore some important science fiction themes about humanity,  the potential pitfalls of artificial intelligence, and what it means to be 'alive'.  Short Circuit was also an especially prescient film on the topic of military robots and how they would be used.

How do these films hold up against modern movie magic?  How do they hold up as comedies?  Were they any good to begin with? Find out in episode 93 of the Media Montage Podcast!

Coming Soon: Short Circuit!

Here is the orignal trailer for Short Circuit, which we will be looking at this Friday on the Media Montage Podcast, along with Short Circuit 2:

It's a remarkable trailer in how little we see of Number 5. If this movie were released today the trailer would be littered with all his best lines.

Media Montage Podcast 92: The Filth

Who are we really?  Is this the only universe, or do other worlds exist above or below us in different planes of reality?  Can the world be prevented from becoming TOO weird?

This week Bruce and Larry look at The Filth, a Vertigo series by Grant Morrison, Chris Weston and Gary Erskine from 2002.  We examine this very unusual story of Ned Slade and Gary Feely and try to find out what it means, or at least some of it.

Parapersonas, Anti-People, iLife, and Status Q in Episode 92 of the Media Montage Podcast.
