Media Montage Podcast 121: The Sociopolitics of Star Wars

It's pretty easy to maintain peace for a thousand years when you have mind control powers in your diplomatic toolbox. Bruce and Larry talk politics and society...in the Star Wars universe! The Force Awakens is right around the corner, and we decided to take a look at the politics and societies of the Empire, the Republic, how one led to the other, and where that might leave us at the start of a new trilogy.

Are droids essentially chattel slaves? What about the moral implications of the Clone Army of the Republic.  The Jedi and the Republic were architects of their own destruction, but did Jango Six Pack on Tatooine really even notice the change in power?  What are the practical implications of competing religious sects influencing Galactic governance? Are Death Stars really good economic or even domestic policy?

All that and more in Episode 121 an all Star Wars episode of the Media Montage Podcast!

Media Montage Podcast 120: What If? Stories

What if the Nazis won WW2? What if the South won the Civil War? What if Spider-Man joined the Fantastic Four? What if? What if? What if?  Larry and Bruce take a look at the concept of 'What If?' stories, alternate histories, parallel universes and Elseworlds.

They examine the fascination we have with considering a single changed event and all the ramifications inherent in such a change.

They even posit a real world 'What If?' scenario: What if Marvel had compromised with or met the demands of the Image Comics founders. Would we even have the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Would we have Spawn?

Media Montage Podcast 114: Synchromystic Theory - Back to the Future, OMAC, and More

Synchronicity is defined as a meaningful coincidence. Synchromysticism is the theory that ties synchronicity with mysticism as it relates to art and media. Esoteric symbols and sequences in films often resonate with current events, seemingly predicting those events with foreknowledge.

What's going on here?

Do some artists have a knack for tapping into the collective unconscious, enabling them to imbue their art with messages and images from another time and place?

This week Bruce and Larry explore a couple of specific instances of synchromystic theory.  We look at 9-11 sychronicities in the 1985 Robert Zemeckis film Back to the Future, as well as Jack Kirby's Gulf War 1 and 2 Predictions in the pages of OMAC and Kamandi.

Follow us down the rabbit hole in Episode 117 of the Media Montage Podcast!

Media Montage Podcast 111: The Boy Who Could Fly (1986)

This week is a listener request...of a sort. Bruce's wife watched 'From Beyond' way back when he and Larry covered that movie in Media Montage Podcast Episode 14

As payback Mrs. Otter picked this week's film, 'The Boy Who Could Fly' from 1986 starring, Jay Underwood, Lucy Deakins, Bonnie Bedalia, Fred Savage, and Fred Gwynn.

Eric Gibb is an autistic boy who finally makes a human connection with Milly,  a new girl in town and their relationship is taken to fantastic levels. Literally.

Steeped in angst, the characters endure one tragedy after another until the over-the-top, upbeat conclusion.  Good performances meet a heart wrenching script with  awhole lot weirdness thrown in. Find out if the boy really can fly in Episode 111 of the Media Montage Podcast!

No! The Beastmaster.

This week Bruce and Larry visit a faraway time and place filled with magic, prophecy and loincloths. Beastmaster is a cable TV classic and seemingly ran forever on HBO and WTBS in the 1980s and 90s, developing cult film status. Media Montage Podcast 101: Introduction to the New World Order

New World Order 101: An introduction to the New World System.

This week Bruce and Larry take a look at a couple of foundational items to the modern New World Order conspiracy theories.

Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars, a document allegedly found inside a copy machine purchased for parts in 1986, lays out a systematic approach to economic warfare that can be waged on a civilian population for all sorts of nefarious purposes.

The New Order of Barbarians is a series of tapes recorded by pediatrician Dr. Lawrence Dunegan in 1988, recalling a presentation he heard in 1969 laying out plans for what he calls the New World System, including control of the media, sex and reproduction and a plan of massive depopulation.

Are these documents real or hoax? Do their predictions come true? Is it all just paranoid rambling? Bruce and Larry try to make heads or tails of a global conspiracy in episode 101 of the Media Montage Podcast!

Media Montage Podcast 98: (Pop) Culture War

It seems like everyone is willing to go to war over everything in pop culture these days.

Not literal war, but flame wars, wars of words, and on and on.

Battles over art, politics, the politics of art, and what should and shouldn't be seen have led Bruce and Larry to take a look at the Culture War as it is framed by their love of Pop Culture, specifically comics.  Bruce and Larry get passionate about the urge to do battle over the things they love, and try to find some solutions.  They get negative at times, but try really hard to come around to some positive steps to make social media interactions enjoyable.

A very different kind of discussion, that probably doesn't solve anything in a very honest and passionate Episode 98 of the Media Montage Podcast.

Tim Blaney as Number 5, Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenburg, Fisher Stevens and Michael McKean appear in Short Circuit (1986) and Short Circuit 2 (1988).

These sweet family comedies explore some important science fiction themes about humanity,  the potential pitfalls of artificial intelligence, and what it means to be 'alive'.  Short Circuit was also an especially prescient film on the topic of military robots and how they would be used.
